STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal men's soccer team suffered another tough defeat, dropping a 2-0 contest to Washington on Friday night at Cagan Stadium. The Huskies scored a goal in each half, while the Cardinal could not convert its chances.
Stanford falls to 3-7-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in the Pac-12. Washington improved to 7-3-2 and 2-2-0 in the Pac-12.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Brent Richards found Casey McCool on a square ball at the top of the box. McCool shot to the right lower corner and beat a diving Jason Dodson.
Washington dominated the first half, outshooting Stanford, 11-5. Dodson kept the game with just a one-goal margin in the 39th minute when he made brilliant diving save. Adam Jahn had Stanford's best opportunity of the half just before the break when he drove a volley from the top of the box, but Washington keeper Spencer Richey made a tough save.
The Cardinal had renewed energy in the second half, but was unable to convert a chance. Alexander Binnie took a rocket shot from the top of the box, but it sailed just wide in the 60th minute.
Washington added to its lead in the 71st minute when Jacob Hustedt made some nifty moves dribbling through Cardinal defenders to the top of the box and then firing low and left to beat Dodson. The goal might have been a result of more Stanford players going forward in search of its own goal.
Washington outshout the Cardinal 6-5 in the second half, while both teams had a pair of corners. Jahn led Stanford with three shots in the game, while Dodson made four saves.
The Cardinal will remain home to face Oregon State on Sunday at 1pm. The Beavers tied California 2-2 on Friday night and are now 1-2-1 in conference.
