Stanford Closes Out Nationals' First Day with Six Wins

Nov. 18, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO-- Stanford sailing is in fourth place at the national match race championships, following a 6-3 record after the first of three days on the San Francisco Bay.

Nick Dugdale, McKenzie Wilson and Kevin Laube closed out the first day by beating two-win Wisconsin and winless Oregon. In a close battle for fourth through sixth place, the Cardinal, St. Mary's College of Maryland and South Florida each had four wins a piece entering the final two races. Stanford swept and the other two teams split, as Dugdale had the Cardinal positioned for third place prior to Tufts' seventh win-- over Wisconsin-- to close out day one.

Navy, which lost to South Florida to close out the day, were 8-1, followed by 7-2 Roger Williams University and Tufts, Stanford at 6-3, and five-win St. Mary's and USF. The bottom four teams are: Texas A&M (3-6), Michigan (2-7), Wisconsin (2-7) and Oregon (0-9).

Stanford's three losses came to Navy, Tufts and St. Mary's (Md.).

Saturday and Sunday's team racing will consist of the top six and bottom four in a second round robin, with the top two teams from the consolation bracket joining the six teams in the quarterfinals. From there a four-team semifinal and head-to-head final finish off the three-day event. Match racing consists of three boats a piece for each team competing head to head in a round robin format. The lowest combined score is deemed the winner.

All races are in front of the Golden Gate Bridge and the St. Francis Yacht Club.
