Nov. 2, 2011

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-ranked Stanford women's basketball opened its exhibition slate with a bang Wednesday night, rolling through UC San Diego, 106-56 at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal closes out its exhibition slate Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. contest against Vanguard. Stanford opens the 2011-12 regular season Friday night, Nov. 11 at Texas.

Associated Press Preseason All-American Nnemkadi Ogwumike went 7-of-12 from the field for 17 points while younger sister Chiney Ogwumike posted a double-double of 19 points (on 8-of-9 shooting) and 14 rebounds.

Junior forward Joslyn Tinkle also went 8-of-9 from the field and posted a double-double, going for 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Stanford, which led 47-24 at halftime, outscored the Tritons, 59-32, in the second half to pull away. Freshman Bonnie Samuelson hit four of her five 3-pointers and scored 12 of her 15 points over the final 20 minutes.

Head coach Tara VanDerveer got the chance to see many different looks from her team, as the Cardinal features six freshman along with the nine returners. All six freshman saw action, combining to score 39 points. Point guard Amber Orrange scored six points and passed out a team-high seven assists in 18 minutes.

The Cardinal opened the contest with a 24-8 run over the first eight minutes. The Ogwumikes scored 14 of those points while freshman Jasmine Camp chipped in with four. Following some substitutions, Stanford's roll slowed as the Cardinal missed its next nine field goals and went without one for the next 5:49.

UC San Diego was able to chip away at its deficit, pulling to within 10 points at 26-16 with 8:43 to go in the half. Emily Osga, who scored 10 points, netted four points for the Tritons over that run. However, the Cardinal defense would hold the line, keeping the Tritons off the scoreboard for the next four minutes while the offense rediscovered its groove.

After getting just five free throws over nearly six minutes, Stanford came back alive with Nnemkadi Ogwumike's layup with 6:17 to go in the half, a bucket that spurred an 18-8 run to the buzzer.

Stanford opened the second half with a 15-3 run that upped the advantage to 62-27. The teams would trade buckets over the next seven and a half minutes until the Cardinal freshmen would put it into another gear. Samuelson made three straight 3-pointers over the span of 2:15 to put Stanford ahead by 48 at 96-48, then Alex Green and Erica Payne would convert layups to get Stanford to the century mark.

Grace Mashore would hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to push the Cardinal past 100, and Tinkle rounded out the scoring with a jumper with 2:07 to play.
