FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - The Ogwumike sisters didn't rebound every missed shot for No. 5 Stanford. It just seemed that way to Fresno State.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Chiney Ogwumike added 13 points and a career-high 16 boards as Stanford used its decisive height and length advantage to defeat Fresno State 93-59 on Sunday.
The Cardinal (6-1) outrebounded the Bulldogs 67-28, falling one shy of the program's single-game record for total rebounds.
Stanford turned 28 offensive rebounds into a decisive 37-6 edge on second-chance points while shooting 50.7 percent from the field.
"Second-chance points are always a good way to imprint your stamp on teams," Nnemkadi Ogwunike said. "Getting those o-boards in the beginning really helped us."
Madison Parrish, Alex Sheedy and Veronica Wilson scored 11 points each for Fresno State (5-3), which has made four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
Bonnie Samuelson sparked Stanford off the bench with a career-high 18 points, making 6 of 8 3-pointers.
Fresno State, shooting 40.5 percent from 3-point range entering the game, went just 8 of 34 (23.5 percent) from beyond the arc against Stanford's aggressive man-to-man defense.
"We wanted to get a hand in their face and kind of limit our helping," Nnemkadi Ogwumike said. "We were focused on staying out on their shooters."
The Cardinal coasted to a 56-27 halftime lead, taking advantage of a 24-2 edge on second-chance points. Stanford's 12 offensive rebounds were more than Fresno State's 11 total rebounds.
Stanford's zone defense did not allow the Bulldogs to get the open looks they are accustomed to. Fresno State was coming off an 81-71 victory over Oregon in which it made a school-record 17 3-pointers.
But against Stanford, the Bulldogs missed their first 10 3-point attempts before Veronica Wilson finally connected with 6:26 remaining in the first half.
"They love shooting 3s, but you kind of live by the 3 and die by the 3," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Today we hit some 3s too. But we're not geared totally toward 3s like they are."
While Fresno State struggled to make outside shots, the Cardinal went 8 of 12 in the first half from beyond the arc. Samuelson did most of the damage, hitting five 3-pointers in just 7 minutes off the bench.
Stanford's outside shooting broke the game open. Samuelson hit three straight 3s to fuel a 15-2 scoring run that ended with the Cardinal comfortably in front 39-13.
"She puts up a lot of shots and they're very accurate," VanDerveer said.
Two 3-pointers by Lindy LaRocque, sandwiching a backcourt steal and layup by Amber Orrange, put the Cardinal ahead 20-8 after Fresno State had closed to within six points.
Stanford jumped to out to an early 10-2 lead with eight of the Cardinal's points coming as a result of offensive rebounds by the Ogwumike sisters.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike grabbed three offensive rebounds during Stanford's first five possessions, leading to three putbacks and two free throws.
Stanford hopes to return to the Save Mart Center in March when the facility hosts an NCAA Regional.
"We dipped our toes in some water here and want to come back," Nnemkadi Ogwumike said.
