BERKELEY, Calif. - For the second-consecutive season, the Cardinal track and field teams swept the Big Meet, this time in Berkeley. The Stanford men won for the sixth-consecutive time, this time by a score of 106-57. The Cardinal women won for the second-straight season, winning convincingly, 122-41.
Stanford dominated both meets with several double winners and taking the meet title in almost every running event. On the men's side Spencer Chase, Amaechi Morton, Tyler Stutzman and Geoffrey Tabor each won a pair of events, while on the women's side Kori Carter was the lone double winner, but one of several to score major points in multiple events.
The Cardinal men dominated the running events, sweeping the 1,500 meters as Tyler Stutzman took the meet title with a time of 3:48.64. Teammates Andrew Berberick and Jim Rosa finished just behind Stutzman in times of 3:48.66 and 3:50.35, respectively.
Stutzman doubled to his win in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.59. Stutzman was just tenths ahead of teammate Luke Lefebure who was second in 1:51.12. Marco Bertolotti completed the Stanford sweep by placing third in 1:51.60.
While the younger guys dominated the middle distances, the old guard of Chris Derrick and Brendan Gregg went 1-2 in the 3,000 meters. Derrick ran a solo 7:54.31, while Gregg was second in 8:03.73.
Amaechi Morton won his two titles in the hurdles, first taking the 110-meter hurdles in 14.15. He then doubled back to easily win his best event, the 400-meter hurdles, in a time of 50.79.
Chase doubled to his victories in the 200 and 400 meters. He ran times of 21.40 in the 200 and 47.64 in the 400. Colin Hepburn was second in the 200 with a time of 21.81, but came back to win the 100 meters in 10.70. Darian Brooks was the runner-up in the 100 in 10.84.
In the relays, Stanford won both as the 4x100-meter team of Brooks, Morton, Hepburn, Chase ran 40.82. In the 4x400 meters, Kevin Cardey, Chase, Lefebure and Morton ran a time of 3:13.96 to take the win.
In the field, Tabor was a double champion, claiming the discus title with a mark of 182-5. Earlier, Tabor also won the shot put with a heave of 54-7 ½.
Aaron Konigsbeg won the javelin 198-6 and also placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 14-1 ¼. Dalton Duvio won the pole vault after clearing 15-7.
Finally, Brooks took home the meet title in the triple jump in his first Big Meet. Brooks leaped 49-11, while Patton Jones was third in the event with a mark of 48-9.
The Cardinal women also swept the 1,500 meters as Kathy Kroeger won the event with a time of 4:28.54. Her teammates Justine Fedronic and Alli Billmeyer were not far behind, finishing with times of 4:29.24 and 4:29.51, respectively.
Kroeger later doubled back to take second in the 3,000 meters, an event won by Jessica Tonn. Tonn finished with a time of 9:32.85, while Kroeger was second in 9:35.90.
Fedronic also placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.23. That event was won by her teammate Joy O'Hare who finished with a time of 2:06.03.
Stanford scored big points in the hurdles as its hurdling duo of Carter and Katie Nelms finished 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles with times 13.43 and 13.55. In the 400-meter hurdles, Carter again took the title in 1:00.39, but Nelms was third as Kala Stepter finished second with a time of 1:00.74. Nelms was third in 1:02.67.
In the 100 meters, Shataya Henricks and Carissa Levingston finished first and second in times of 11.71 and 11.85. Levinston later came back to win the 200 meters in 23.59.
Kellie Schueler won the 400 meters in a time of 54.57.
Stanford also won both relays, winning the 4x100 meters in 46.02. Hendricks, Levingston, Nelms and Carter combined with that win, while in the 4x400 meters it was MadelineTreasure, Stepter, Schueler and Arantxa King. They finished with a time of 3:42.90.
In the field, the Cardinal swept the pole vault with Katerina Stefanidi winning with a mark of 13-11 ¼. Ellie McCardwell and Katie Zingheim tied for second as both cleared 12-9 ½.
The Cardinal went 1-2 in the shot put with Alyssa Wisdom taking the title in 50-10 ¼ and Rebecca Hammar taking second in 47-3. Hammar then came back to with the discus with a mark of 156-7, while teammate Christina Medina placed second with a toss of 139-4.
Also in the throw, Briana Bain won the javelin in 171-2.
Elaine Patten need a jump off, but won the high jump in 5-6 ½, while Adrienne Johnson was third at the same height, but with more misses.
In the triple jump, Jordan Merback took the meet title with leaps of 42-2. Karynn Dunn was third in 40-0, which was her second of the day after also taking third in the long jump.
The Cardinal will be back in action next weekend when it travels to the Mt. SAC Relays and the Triton Invitational.
