Stanford Makes it Four in a Row with Win Over Saint Mary's

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford wrapped the up the regular season with a 16-7 win over Saint Mary's. The win was the fourth in a row for Stanford who finishes 7-9, but 5-2 in the MPSF. Stanford has earned the No. 3 seed in the MPSF Tournament and will take on second-seeded Denver in the first round.

The Cardinal jumped all over Saint Mary's from the start, building an 11-4 halftime lead. Seniors Catherine Swanson and Anna Boeri both scored first-half goals on the same day that they were honored as a part of senior day.

Emilie Boeri and Maria Fortino were also honored before the game. Boeri had a pair of assists, while Fortino caused a pair of turnovers.

Freshman Emily Newstrom recorded a first-half hat trick as the Cardinal outshot the Gaels 22-8 for the half.

The Cardinal built its lead to as many as 11 in the second half as Kyle Fraser and Carolyn Bradley joined Newstrom with hat tricks. Anna Kim and Hannah Farr added two goals apiece, while Meredith Kalinowski was the other goal scorer.

For the game, Stanford outshot Saint Mary's, 33-17, and won 15 of 24 draw controls. Swanson had six draw controls to lead the Cardinal. Lyndsey Munoz was solid as usual, making seven saves.

Stanford will now attempt to win its eighth-consecutive MPSF tournament, which begins Friday. Stanford will host the tournament, beginning with top seed Oregon facing No. 4 seed California on Friday at 4:30pm. Stanford will take on Denver the that same day, Friday, April 27, at 7pm. The two semifinal winners will matchup on Sunday at 1pm.
