Opening Day Bodes Well for Cardinal Sailing

Sept. 22, 2012

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Stanford sailing stands in fifth place after day one of the St. Mary's Interconference, as southerly breezes from 8-15 knots gave way for great racing Saturday at the intersectional regatta to open the Cardinal's fall slate.

The Cardinal totaled 171 points and trail Old Dominion (135), Roger Williams (149), Dartmouth (157) and Boston College (170) in the standings.

Stanford shelved 70 points in the A Division behind the efforts of Oliver Toole and Haley Kirk, ranking third among the 18-team field.

In the B Division, Kieran Chung-Wolf and Kelly Ortel finished seventh with 101 points.

The action wraps up Sunday with results available at scores.collegesailing.org.

Across the country in Southern California, Kevin Laube, Jack Ortel and McKenzie Wilson combined to post four wins and one loss at the San Diego Yacht Club Match Race. Competing with four other squads, the Cardinal completed the first of two round-robin showdowns with the second set for Sunday. Sunday will also feature the event's semifinals and finals.
