WAKEFIELD, R.I. - The Stanford sailing team notched its first win of the fall season by capturing the Moody Trophy this past weekend. The Cardinal topped the 19-team field at the intersectional regatta hosted by the University of Rhode Island with 61 points.
In the A-Division, Oliver Toole and Haley Kirk teamed to total 31 points with Kieran Chung-Wolf and Kelly Ortel racking up 30 points in the B-Division.
Chung-Wolf and Ortel came up big with a trio of wins in the B-Divison.
"Last week was a great one for our program," head coach John Vandemoer said. "We sent players to two high-level events. Some of our best went to the Moody Trophy to face some of the best players in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Some went to the Hobart event and did very well despite a rough final set of competition.
"It's always great to get that first win of the year under your belt. We worked hard, beat some stiff competition and this is another step down the road for us. We've got a long way to go, and hopefully this helps us get to another level."
Racing conditions for were near ideal on day one of the Moody Trophy. Sunday's conditions were not nearly as worthy of racing with unstable, very light northerly breezes that would never settle in.
In the end, it was the team that traveled the farthest that earned the win.
Stanford also shipped a unit to the Hobart and William Smith Invitational in Geneva, N.Y.
Jack Ortel and Sammy Steele (A-Division) teamed with Max Kohrman and Noelle Herring (B-Division) for a sixth-place finish. Ortel and Steele posted 78 points with Kohrman and Herring posting 85 for a 163 total. Ortel and Steel posted three straight wins midway through the event.
