LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Stanford men's swimming team maintained its stance on top of the Arena Invitational leaderboard Friday with six wins at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Stanford has racked up 1,414 points through the second of the three-day event, leading second-place Hawaii (551) and host UC San Diego (518) among the 10 competing teams.

"There were some very nice swims near the top of each event and some good depth was shown in others," Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp said. "The team is competing very well and we'll see some very good swims from tomorrow's events."

Matthew Swanston, David Nolan, Aaron Wayne and Andrew Saeta won the 200 medley relay in 1:27.15, slightly off the meet record 1:27.07 set by Stanford in 2011. Swanston, Nolan and Wayne each were part of that 2011 relay squad.

Matt Thompson delivered a 3:46.78 to win the 400 individual medley with Bryan Offutt (3:48.46) taking second. Robert Hommel (3:50.75) was third as Stanford claimed the top five spots.

Wayne found himself ahead of the pack with a 46.85 in the 100 fly and Mitch Stoehr won the 200 free in 1:36.13. Saeta (1:37.17) was the second of five Cardinal swimmers in the top five of the event.

The 100 breast saw Sebastian Wigstrom (55.50) earn fourth-place points.

Swanston (47.66) held off BYU's Preston Jenkins (47.86) to win the 100 back. Will Gunderson (48.16) was third and Nolan (48.48) was fourth in the event.

The Cardinal won the 800 free relay in 6:29.28 on the strength of swims by Wayne, Nolan, Stoehr and Saeta.

Stanford finishes the Arena Invitational with Saturday morning's preliminary session followed by the evening's finals. Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
