DAVIS, Calif. - Andrew Berberick earned the first individual title of his collegiate cross country career, winning the Doc Adams Invitational on Saturday and leading the Cardinal men to the team crown.
Berberick, a redshirt junior, was among four Stanford runners in the top five while leading the Cardinal to the title with 19 points, beating runner-up Sacramento State (57) and third-place California (90) in the eight-team field. All six Stanford runners finished in the top 10.
Perhaps making a bid to be considered for Stanford's NCAA regional team, Berberick covered the 8,000-meter Putah Creek Reserve course in 24 minutes, 4 seconds - a time that would have placed him among Stanford's top six for that distance in any meet this season.
Berberick's previous highest invitational placing had been sixth, in 2011 at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational. He placed 24th this year in the same meet in his only other race in 2012.
Among Stanford runners: Riley Sullivan (24:07) placed second, Billy Orman was fourth (24:08), Thomas Graham was fifth (24:11), Tyler Valdes was ninth (24:47), and Kenny Krotzer was 10th (24:58).
This was the fourth invitational title for Stanford this season, following team victories at the USF, Stanford, and Wisconsin meets.
Three Stanford runners competed in the women's open division. Emily Amaro was fourth over the 6,000-meter course in 21:12 to lead the Cardinal. Hannah Varnell was sixth (21:44) and Mary Kate Anselmini was 13th (22:04).
Stanford next competes on Friday at the NCAA West Regional at Seattle's Jefferson Park Golf Course. The women's race begins at noon, and the men follow at 1:15 p.m.
