Cardinal Drops Home Opener to Wildcats

Nov. 9, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team fell in its home opener, 32-6, to 12th-ranked Northwestern, Friday, at the Ford Center in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal is now 3-1 overall this season, while the Wildcats are 1-0.

Redshirt freshman 125-pounder Evan Silver was the lone Cardinal to secure a win on the evening. The Chevy Chase, Md., native posted a fall in 5:34 for his first collegiate fall.

The Wildcats captured an early 9-0 lead in the dual. Northwestern's 10th-ranked Levi Mele posted a 17-2 technical fall over Stanford true freshman Peter Russo in 5:00 at 133 pounds. The Wildcats' Pat Greco then recorded a 10-2 major decision against Stanford sophomore Josh Lauderdale at 141 pounds.

Northwestern increased its lead to 12-0 at 149 pounds. Stanford senior Timmy Boone dropped an 8-4 decision to the Wildcats' Dylan Marriott. Boone recorded a takedown in the first period for the early lead, but was unable to maintain it in the second, where Marriott scored two takedowns and an escape.

The Wildcats increased their lead to 18-0 after Stanford junior Garrett Schaner dropped an 8-2 decision at 157 pounds to third-ranked Jason Welch. Junior Bret Baumbach then fell, 11-4, to No. 15 Pierce Harger at 165 pounds. The score was tied 2-2 after the first period as Harger recorded a takedown and then Baumbach scored on a reversal. After no score in the second period, Harger picked up eight points in the third and secured riding time.

Northwestern continued its scoring at 174 pounds. No. 10 Lee Munster posted a 17-1 technical fall over Cardinal true freshman Ryan Davies in 6:22. Junior Alan Yen then just narrowly missed forcing an overtime period at 184 pounds, falling to Marcus Shrewsbury, 6-3. Trailing 4-1 in the final period, Yen recorded a takedown to cut the lead to one. After allowing Schrewsbury the escape, Yen failed to score another takedown and erase the riding time, which would have forced an extra period.

At 197 pounds, redshirt freshman Michael Sojka was unable to put any points on the board for the Cardinal, falling 4-1 to Northwestern's Alex Polizzi. The Wildcats pushed the score to 32-0 at heavyweight. Fifth-ranked Mike McMullan, an All-American last season, posted a 6-3 decision over Stanford junior Dan Scherer.

In the final bout of the evening, Silver finally got the Cardinal on the board at 125 pounds with a fall over Dominick Malone in 5:34. With the score tied 1-1 in the third period, Silver took Malone down and then from his back secured the fall.

Stanford will be in action again on Saturday, travelling to Fresno, Calif., to compete in the Roadrunner Open hosted by CSU Bakersfield. The Cardinal will then return to The Farm to play host to Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.
