Stanford Sailors Come Up Roses

Jan. 10, 2013

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Contrary to the expected forecast, there was no precipitation on the windup of the 28th annual Rose Bowl Regatta last Sunday at Long Beach's U.S. Sailing Center ... except for more roses raining down on the Stanford sailing team after it came from behind to steal the championship from College of Charleston.

The Cardinal sailors had to make up 13 points in only four races earlier this week on the latter outing of the two-day event to overtake the Cougars, doing so in dramatic fashion to win the event.

"This was a great event for our sailors, programs and for Stanford," head coach John Vandemoer said. "After seeing the football team win the Rose Bowl, it was great to parlay their success in Southern California with a win of our own. I was proud of the way we raced and we're looking forward to taking this momentum into the spring season."

Stanford's 67 points put the squad in front of second-place College of Charleston (84) and defending champion Boston College (107) among the field. No. 1 Georgetown was fourth with 111 points.

Stanford was represented in the A-Division by Kevin Laube and Michelle Catania, with Kieran Chung-Wolf and Haley Kirk competing in the B-Division. The Cardinal swept the A- and B-Divisions. Laube and Catania posted 39 points with Chung-Wolf and Kirk registering 28 points.

The event was based at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, hosted by the USC Sailing Team and organized by the U.S. Sailing Center of Long Beach.

The regatta was held days after Sailing World released its conference rankings for the 2012 fall season, with the Cardinal topping the PCCSC in both the coed and women's polls.
