Four Cardinal Pick Up Wins at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team fell at CSU Bakersfield 24-13, Sunday, on the road in Bakersfield, Calif. Stanford drops to 6-15 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-12, while the Roadrunners are 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Junior heavyweight Dan Scherer opened the dual with a 3-2 decision over Sammy Cervantes. Scherer recorded a takedown in the first period, which proved to be the difference in the match. He is now 19-9 overall and 12-7 in duals.

The Roadrunners captured wins in the next three bouts to take the lead in the dual, 13-3. Stanford senior Timmy Boone cut into that lead with a 4-2 sudden victory over Dalton Kelley at 149 pounds. There was no score heading into the third period, but Kelley had secured riding time. Boone tallied a takedown to take the lead, but Kelley earned the escape to force extra periods. Not until the fourth overtime period did Boone register a takedown at the 0:52 mark to seal the win.

Junior Bret Baumbach was back in the line-up for the Cardinal at 165 pounds. He shut out David Meza, 12-0, for his fifth major decision win of the year. He tallied two takedowns, an escape, six near fall points and 3:49 of riding time to improve to 20-9 overall and 15-5 in duals.

Redshirt freshman Michael Sojka scored the final points of the dual with a 2-0 decision over Frankie Hurtado at 197 pounds. Sojka scored an escape in the second period and captured 1:45 of riding time in the victory. He improves to 15-14 on the year.

Stanford wraps-up the dual portion of its schedule on Saturday, Feb. 16 against Central Michigan. The dual is set for Noon PT in Burnham Pavilion and will be streamed live on the Pac-12 website.
