John Murray has served as the Director of Strength & Conditioning for Stanford University women's basketball since April, 2001. His training approach is based on functionally addressing the individual needs of the players while incorporating basketball specific exercises.

Murray graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in Psychology. He then received his M.A. in Clinical Sports Psychology from John F. Kennedy University.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Murray began his career in athletic performance training when he directed a sports fitness program in San Francisco's Tenderloin district for under privileged, at-risk youths. In addition to this experience, Murray has consulted for a number of high school athletic programs in San Francisco. Prior to joining the Stanford Basketball staff, Murray spent two years as a physical therapy assistant for Physiotherapy Associates in Fremont, Ca. Murray is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a United States Weightlifting Federation Certified Club Coach, a Certified Massage Therapist, and a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Murray has studied and practiced martial arts for the past 20 years.

Murray brings a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to Stanford Basktball from his international work with professional athletes. He has worked with the Canadian Football League's Sacramento Goldminders, Japanese Basketball League's Japan Energy Griffins and Bosch Blue Winds, and Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes in addiiton to numerous professional athletes whom he has trained individually.

Among some of the professional basketball players Murray has worked with are Teshawn Prince, Freddie Jones, Troy Bell, Casey Jacobsen, Joel Pryzbilla and Curtis Borchardt. In addition to his work with Stanford Basketball, John serves as the director of Program Development and Synergy Performance Training for the Riekes Center in Menlo Park.
