STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's coed squad moved up to No. 2 in the national poll and looks to keep the momentum going while playing host to this weekend's Charlie Dole Trophy (April 20-21). The Cardinal trails only Georgetown in the coed poll and ranks ninth in the women's poll.
Stanford will also send sailors to the upcoming Admiral's Cup (April 20-21) in Kings Points, N.Y., and to the Thompson Trophy (April 20-21) in New London, Conn.
Stanford was ninth with 258 points at last week's Emily Wick Trophy on the Thames River. Top-ranked Yale (133) won the event.
"The Wick Trophy was an important regatta for our women's team, as it will be our last regatta before nationals with 18 good boats on the line," Stanford head coach John Vandemoer said. "We came into the regatta focused on getting better on the starting line with a bigger fleet, and the ladies accomplished that. They continue to prove that they are a top 10 team in the country."
The A-Division unit of Sarah Mace and Katie Riklin posted 112 points and a pair of wins with one second-place finish. Mace and Riklin took fifth overall in the A-Division.
Molly McKinney, Natalie Urban and Michelle Catania shelved 146 points in the B-Division.
The wind direction varied drastically on both Saturday and Sunday of the regatta. Races one through five in A-Division and one through four in B-Division were sailed in a shifty northwesterly. The wind then died and shifted to the southwest for the final races on day one. On Sunday, the opposite trend played out with the wind starting out southwest and shifting to the northwest.
