A first-team All-American as a fifth-year senior in 1961, Steve Smith nearly became Stanford’s s second individual NCAA golf champion. After knocking out Jack Nicklaus, who would later become one of the most storied players in golf history, in the quarterfinals of the 1960 tournament, he took a six-hole lead with one round to play in the finals, but defending champion Dick Crawford of Houston roared back over the final 18 to win by two holes. Smith competed in several amateur tournaments, and was named Executive Director of the Long Island Golf Association in 2004. | |||||||||||
