Top-Ranked Stanford Suffers First Defeat of Season, 83-66
NORFOLK, Va. -- Nyree Roberts scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack as fourt -ranked Old Dominion knocked off top-ranked Stanford, 83-66, handing Cardinal coach Tara Van Derveer her first loss since 1995.
Clarissa Machanguana and Ticha Penichiero scored 16 points apiece and Aubrey Eblin added 12 for the Lady Monarchs (8-1), who led 40-32 at halftime and pulled away in the second half, when they shot better than 65 percent (17-of-26) from the field.
Kate Starbird scored 17 points for Stanford (9-1), which had extended its winning streak to nine games on Sunday with an impressive win at Tennessee.
Van Derveer's last loss came in the 1995 Final Four. She took a leave of absence as Stanford coach last season to serve as the coach of the Olympic women's team. That sqaud went 52-0 on an exhibition tour and won all eight Olympic games as it roared to the gold medal at Atlanta.
