SEATTLE - The No. 15/16 Stanford softball split a doubleheader at No. 14 Washington, winning 6-4 in the first game and falling 7-1 in the second, Sunday, at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle, Wash. The Cardinal now stands at 29-15 overall and 6-9 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies are 34-13 and 12-6 in the conference.
Sophomore pitcher Nyree White earned her first start of the season in game one, but was pulled after two batters. Freshman Kelsey Stevens picked up the win, throwing 6.1 innings to move to 11-6. She allowed just two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Senior Teagan Gerhart entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and notched her fifth save of the year.
Gerhart started the second game, falling to 16-8 overall. She went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks. Washington junior Kaitlin Inglesby picked up the win, moving to 19-5 overall.
For the second straight game, senior shortstop Jenna Rich got the Cardinal on the board first with a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning. It marked the eighth homer of the year for the El Segundo, Calif., native, who now has sole possession of second place on Stanford's career list with 41.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the first as lead-off hitter Victoria Hayward and first baseman Hooch Fagaly hit consecutive home runs to put UW up 2-1. Head coach John Rittman pulled White after the second batter, replacing her with Stevens. After Stevens struck out designated player Kaitlin Inglesby, the teams were sent back to the dugouts for an 11 minute rain delay.
The Cardinal regained the lead in the top of the third inning, 3-2. With one out, sophomore third baseman Hanna Winter singled through the left side and then freshman first baseman Kayla Bonstrom hit a two-run shot to right centerfield. It was the fourth long ball of the season for the rookie.
Washington tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth as Hayward hit her second solo home run of the game. The Huskies then loaded the bases with no outs, but line outs to Winter and Rich and a strikeout for Stevens ended the inning without any further damage done.
Stanford recaptured the lead, scoring three runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. With runners on the corners, freshman catcher Jessica Plaza hit an RBI double to left centerfield, scoring sophomore Erin Ashby. Winter then drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home pinch runner Alyssa Lombardo, and then Bonstrom hit her fourth sacrifice fly to left field, scoring pinch runner Corey Hanewich.
In the second game of the day, Washington pulled ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Fagaly hit her second solo home run of the day for the Huskies in her first at-bat.
Stanford knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Plaza led off the inning with a double to right centerfield. Pinch runner Tylyn Wells replaced Plaza and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sarah Hassman. Bonstrom brought her home with a single up the middle.
Washington answered in the bottom half of the inning, going up 5-1. Fagaly hit a single to left field, scoring second baseman Kelli Suguro. Inglesby then hit a three-run shot to left field for the Huskies.
Washington added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as left fielder Whitney Jones hit a two-run homer to right field.
Up next, Stanford will play a midweek game at Pacific on Wednesday, April 24 before playing host to Pac-12 foe Utah, April 26-28. The Cardinal and Utes' Friday and Sunday games will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
