STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's sand volleyball team topped San Francisco, 4-1, Sunday, at the ACSR Sand Volleyball Courts in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal moves to 5-1 on the season.
Playing together for the first time this season, the Cardinal's No. 5 pair of Morgan Boukather notched a 21-16, 21-15 win over USF's Mackenzie Murtagh and Inbar Vinarsky. Bai registered 15 kills, 17 digs and two aces in the match, while Boukather added eight kills, eight digs and three aces.
Previously undefeated, Stanford's No. 4 pair of Inky Ajanaku and Mary Ellen Luck dropped their first match of the year, 21-19, 21-18 to Courtney Sabahi and Malina Terrell. Ajanaku tallied 18 kills and nine digs in the loss, while Luck finished with three kills, 11 digs and three aces.
Stanford's Rachel Williams and Jordan Burgess, the No. 2 pair, put the Cardinal ahead 2-1 in the match with a 21-12, 21-14 victory over Rebecca Kopilovitch and Jurja Vlasic. Williams posted 12 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Burgess totaled 11 kills, 15 digs and an ace for the Cardinal.
Playing in the No. 3 spot, Kyle Gilbert and Madi Bugg clinched the win for Stanford with a 23-21, 21-11 win over Leanna Ludes and Anja Segota. Gilbert recorded 20 kills and 17 digs, while Bugg added seven digs and 10 aces.
Stanford's top duo of Brittany Howard and Carly Wopat finished things off with a 21-14, 21-12 victory against Sara Staengle and Valentina Zaloznik. Wopat had 16 kills, eight digs, two aces and a block in the win, while Howard added seven kills, four digs and four aces.
Burgess also teamed up with freshman Megan McGehee to win an exhibition match over Alycia Cox and Jessica Keenan.
The Cardinal will be back in action later today, taking on Sacramento State at 3 p.m. The Hornets are facing the Dons at Noon.
