STANFORD, Calif. - Justin Ringo drove in five runs on a grand slam and solo homer to lead No. 14 Stanford to a 17-2 win over area rival San Jose State.
Ringo had two of Stanford's 17 hits on the day as the Cardinal (23-12) rides an offensive wave heading into this weekend's Pac-12 Conference baseball series at Oregon.
The Cardinal is hitting .348 with a .629 slugging pct. over its last six games and seeks a fifth straight Pac-12 series win when it visits the Ducks. Stanford is tied for third with UCLA in the league standings at 9-6 with Oregon State (11-4) and Oregon (13-5) leading the pack. Stanford has yet to play any of the three teams.
Stanford, which has won five of its last six, hit five home runs to produce a season-high 17 RBI against the Spartans. The offensive outburst began with a nine-run first inning that saw Ringo belt a grand slam, the first of hits two home runs on the night.
The nine runs were the most in an inning since posting a 13-spot last season against Texas. Stanford also added three in the third and four in the sixth.
Dave Nakama made his Sunken Diamond debut Tuesday as head coach at San Jose State (13-27). Nakama, who is in his first season with the Spartans, was familiar with the surroundings having served two stints as an assistant coach at Stanford (1997-98, 2002-09).
In Nakama's 10 seasons at Stanford, the Cardinal won four Pac-10 championships, five NCAA Regional crowns and appeared in the College World Series four times (1997, 2002, 2003, and 2008).
Nakama's club got out to a short-lived 1-0 lead before the Cardinal went to work.
Bobby Zarubin (3-1) recovered from a shaky first to fan seven of 21 batters faced for the win in 5.0 innings. Zarubin allowed one earned run on five hits and left with a 13-1 lead.
Austin Wilson had two home runs, the latter of which came on the backend of back-to-back shots with Brian Ragira in the four-run sixth. Wilson and Ragira had four hits and three RBI apiece.
Along with score a team-high four runs, Wilson also had two homers in a 2012 meeting with the Spartans.
Raigra has now recorded at least one RBI in each of the last eight contests and is one of four Cardinal hitting over .400 in the last six games, turning in a .517 average with four home runs over that stretch.
Spenser Linney made his season debut with a strikeout and Jordan Kutzer was perfect in his career debut with a pair of outs in the ninth.
Zach Hoffpauir saved his first career hit for the eighth with one of Stanford's six doubles. Wayne Taylor had a career-high three doubles, becoming the second player to record as many in a single game this season.
Stanford scored three runs before San Jose State record an out in the first on Brian Guymon's sacrifice fly. It was the first RBI on the season for Guymon in his third start.
Eight of nine batters in the lineup scored in their first time around the order.
San Jose State plunked six batters and issued nine walks.
Daniel Chavez (1-3) took the loss without getting out of the first. Chavez allowed five earned runs on three hits.
