STANFORD, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Stanford men’s gymnastics team claimed three individual conference titles and finished second Saturday evening at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.
Stanford tallied a 425.950 team score to finish behind No. 2 Oklahoma (435.350). The Cardinal finished ahead of No. 9 California (419.550) and Air Force Academy (416.400).
Eddie Penev claimed conference titles in the all-around and floor, while Cameron Foreman earned co-champion honors on parallel bars.
Penev finished first in the all-around with an 88.200 and claimed his sixth victory in the event on the season. He notched a 15.950 on floor to claim the meet’s highest score.
Foreman tied for first on parallel bars with a 14.800. It was Foreman’s second parallel bars victory on the season.
Stanford opened the meet on vault and got off to a great start, posting a 74.450. Sean Senters led the Cardinal with a 15.300 and finished second. Penev delivered a 15.050 to finish third.
Jonathan Deaton also had a strong performance on vault, providing a career-best 14.850 to finish sixth.
Along with Foreman’s top performance on parallel bars, Penev and Brian Knott also contributed strong routines in the event, scoring 14.700 and 14.400. Penev finished fourth in the event, while Knott took sixth.
Stanford was paced on high bar by Penev, who recorded a second-place finish after tying his career best of 14.800.
As the Cardinal challenged Oklahoma for the top spot, Stanford received a boost in its fourth rotation on floor.
Stanford recorded a season-best team score of 75.450 on floor. Along with Penev’s meet-best performance in the event, Senters scored a career-high 15.300 to place third. The Cardinal also had strong performances from Jordan Nolff (14.800), Mike Levy (14.750) and Deaton (14.650).
The team ran into challenges on pommel horse as it recorded a season-low team score of 63.950. However, despite the low team score, John Martin and Gabriel Alvarado managed third and fourth-place finishes with scores of 14.300 and 14.200, respectively.
Stanford finished the meet strong on rings as freshman Dennis Zaremski led the way with a 14.900 to finish tied for third. Penev recorded a 14.600 and Nolff earned a 14.050 to contribute to the Cardinal’s strong finish.
Stanford will look to regroup as it prepares for the NCAA Championships hosted by Penn State on April 19-21.
