STANFORD, Calif. -The Stanford women's sand volleyball team swept Santa Clara, 5-0, Tuesday, at the ACSR Sand Volleyball Courts in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal improves to 3-1 on the season with its first sweep in program history.
Playing together for the first time and as the No. 1 pair, Brittany Howard and Carly Wopatdowned Taylor Milton and Dani Rottman, 21-10, 21-17. Howard finished with 15 kills, 14 digs, two aces and a block, while Wopat tallied 10 kills, 11 digs and five aces.
Stanford's Morgan Boukatherand Megan McGehee put the Cardinal up 2-0 with an 18-21, 21-13, 15-11 win over Kim Meyers and Lacey Maas. McGehee notched 11 kills, 12 digs and three aces, while Boukather added seven kills and 15 digs.
Clinching the win for the Cardinal, and partnering up for the first time, was Jordan Burgess and Rachel Williams. The No. 2 pair defeated Haley Cameron and Alyssa Anderson, 21-19, 21-15. Williams registered 14 kills, 10 digs and two aces, while Burgess finished with nine kills, 18 digs and four aces.
Madi Bugg and Kyle Gilbert, the No. 3 team, topped Kat Douglas and Sarah Vaccaro in three sets (21-14, 19-21, 15-10). Bugg posted 18 kills, 27 digs and eight service aces. Gilbert collected eight kills, 16 digs and two aces for the Cardinal.
Capping off the sweep and remaining undefeated on the season was Inky Ajanaku and Mary Ellen Luck. The pair topped Katy Schatzman and Chloe Sliger, 21-11, 21-19. Ajanaku tallied 14 kills, 12 digs and three blocks in the win, while Luck pitched in with eight kills, 20 digs and an ace.
Stanford will be back in action on Tuesday, April 16 as it plays host to the University of the Pacific. The Cardinal and Tigers will square-off at 3:30 p.m. PT at the ACSR Sand Volleyball Courts.
