SAN JOSE, Calif. - No. 23 Stanford shelved double-digit hits for the third straight game while earning a 10-8 non-conference win over San Jose State Tuesday at Municipal Stadium. Stanford (17-10) used 11 hits to match its season-best run total.
San Jose State (11-22) had 15 hits and both teams produced a five-run inning.
The Cardinal and Spartans combined for 10 extra-base hits, including eight doubles by as many players.
Stanford is hitting .355 over its last three contests with a .496 slugging pct.
Knotted at 7-7 heading into the ninth, Stanford scored three runs and held San Jose State to only one in the final half frame.
The Spartans had the tying run at the plate with two down. Ricky Acosta singled to center with two on to cut into the Cardinal lead, 10-8. Sheldon Daquioag looked at strike three to end the game.
Stanford left the bases loaded in the first and responded by batting around in the second. Doubles by Alex Blandino, Wayne Taylor and Brant Whiting did enough to put San Jose State in a 5-0 hole.
Jacob Valdez chalked a one-out double as San Jose State waited until the second for its first hit. Kalei Contrades doubled home Valdez to make it 5-1 in favor of Stanford.
Blandino sailed a solo shot to the deepest part of the yard as his second home run on the season cleared the two-story fence 390 feet away in dead center.
After Blandino nailed the 3-0 offering, Justin Ringo reached first on catcher's interference, Taylor drew a walk and Austin Slater drove in Stanford's seventh run with a single to left.
Ringo went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Blandino doubled, homered and twice crossed the plate.
John Hochstatter gave up one earned run in 4.0 innings and fanned four during his start.
David Schmidt took over in the fifth and kept the Spartans scoreless.
In the sixth, San Jose pieced together a five-run frame on six hits. Schmidt loaded the bases without an out and Dean McArdle stepped in to help get the Cardinal out of trouble.
Schmidt was tagged for four earned runs in 1.0 inning.
Sam Lindquist provided 1.1 innings of shutout relief while striking out three.
San Jose State added one to tie it in the seventh and had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth. A.J. Vanegas (1-1) entered and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Vanegas relieved the next two to get out of the fix.
Wilson's second hit was a one-out double in the ninth. Blandino walked, Ringo doubled to left and Taylor sailed a sacrifice fly as the Cardinal went on to claim a 9-7 lead with the visitors going on to add one more.
Vanegas, who struck out three, allowed one earned run on two hits in the final 1.2 innings.
Drew Bradshaw (0-1) faced six and surrendered three earned runs on a pair of hits in the loss.
