ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Stanford finished fifth at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championship, wrapping up the chase for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy Friday. The Cardinal rallied back from 10th-place on day one to secure the top-five showing among the 18-team field.
"I'm really proud of the ladies, and they sailed their best all year this week at the nationals," Stanford head coach John Vandemoer said. "That's all you can ask from your players. The whole team did a great job getting them ready for this regatta and it showed."
Dartmouth (203) finished first and St. Mary's (Md.) was second with 241 points. Cornell (267) was one point ahead of the Cardinal and Boston College, who had 268 points apiece. The tiebreaker went to fourth-place Boston College to cap off the three-day event.
Stanford, ranked 10th nationally heading into the championships, produced 157 points in the A-Division and 111 B-Division points.
The A-Division trio of Sarah Mace, Katie Riklin and Helena Scutt finished seventh overall. Molly McKinney and Natalie Urban were third in the B-Division.
The Cardinal moved into fifth place Thursday following a bounce-back performance with 106 points on the day, moving its points total to 216.
With just four races remaining, Stanford got the strong showing it needed to stay in the hunt.
Mace and Riklin tallied 55 points Thursday, an improvement over Wednesday's 66.
McKinney and Urban led Stanford's B-Division unit to 51 points on day two, bringing their total to 95.
Stanford got off to a relatively slow start on Wednesday and stood in 10th place overall with 110 points.
Stanford entered the race as one of nine finalists and joined the mix against nine teams advancing from Tuesday's semifinals.
