Coed Sailing Sixth at Nationals

May 27, 2013

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Stanford finished sixth out of a 14-team field at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Team Race National Championship over the weekend while going 12-8. The Cardinal fell just one win shy of the final four.

Yale (18-5) finished first with St. Mary's (16-7), Brown (14-9) and Georgetown (14-9) rounding out the final four. Fifth-place College of Charleston finished one win ahead of the Cardinal.

The Stanford team of Kevin Laube, Oliver Toole, Kieran Chung, Kelly Ortel, Katie Riklin, Haley Kirk and Yuri Namikawa entered Team Race Nationals as the top-ranked unit after winning the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Championship.

Stanford fell out of a three-way tie for first place, which it held with Brown and Yale on the first day of the championship regatta, ending the second day of races in fifth. After advancing to the top eight, the Cardinal went 2-7 in the round, ending its shot at the Walter C. Wood Trophy.

The Stanford sailing squad will now turn its focus to the Gill Coed Championships held May 28-30.

After a sixth-place finish in team races and a fifth-place finish in women's races last week, the coed regatta will be the Cardinal's last chance for a national title this season.
