TEMPE, Ariz. - A hitless Brian Ragira delivered a two-RBI single down the stretch as No. 22 Stanford held on for a 9-8 win in 11 innings to clinch its series against No. 8 Arizona State. Ragira's hit, one of 11 on the evening for the Cardinal, provided the visitors with a two-run cushion in the 11th and Sam Lindquist stranded three in the bottom half to earn the victory.
Stanford (26-15,11-9) rode the arm of Lindquist (2-1) down the stretch, and the righty turned in 4.1 innings of three-hit ball. Lindquist, who fanned a pair, loaded the bases in the 11th and induced a two-out grounder to Danny Diekroeger. Diekroeger gathered the ball and threw to first in time to stay on the favorable side of a game-ending banger
The hustle play paid off to wrap up the dramatic Pac-12 Conference baseball affair Saturday at Packard Stadium.
Arizona State (29-14-1, 11-9) left the bases loaded in the fourth, sixth and 11th.
The two teams wrap up the series at 12:30 p.m. (PT) on Sunday.
Stanford battled back from a 7-4 deficit to knot it at 7-7 in the seventh. Justin Ringo looped a one-out single to left, Ragira drew a walk and Austin Wilson went opposite field with his fourth home run on the season.
First-year hurler Ryan Kellogg entered the game with a 10-0 record and left without a decision after going 7.0 innings. Kellogg gave up seven earned runs on nine hits.
Arizona State used two more pitchers before settling on Ryan Burr (2-2), who allowed two earned runs on a pair of hits in 2.2 innings.
Austin Slater trumped Ringo's leadoff single with a two-run home in the opener. It was just the second home run allowed by Kellogg in over 73 innings and one of four Cardinal hits in the first.
Michael Benjamin went yard on Daniel Starwalt in the bottom half. Starwalt made his second career start, earning the Saturday nod after limiting Oregon to one earned run on three hits in 5.1 innings last week.
Starwalt permitted four earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.
Arizona State used two singles in the second to tie the game at 2-2.
Stanford took a 4-2 lead in the fourth when Lonnie Kauppila doubled home Diekroeger and Brant Whiting tripled home Kauppila.
Trevor Allen responded with a solo home run. Michael Benjamin put the Sun Devils ahead by delivering a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded.
Allen had a game-high four hits.
The Sun Devils posted a two-spot in the sixth.
Dominic Jose's two-out triple in the sixth went for naught.
Arizona State left the potential winning run stranded on second in the bottom of the ninth.
Each of Stanford's starters had at least one hit, with Ringo and Diekroeger sharing team-high honors with two. Ringo scored three times.
