STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sailing had a successful weekend of competition that included eight top-five individual performances at four regattas.
Stanford opened the weekend at the PCCSC Women’s Singlehanded Championships in Long Beach, Calif., where the Cardinal swept the top three positions. Racing radial boats, Molly McKinney (9), Sarah Mace (10) and McKenzie Wilson (17) claimed the competition’s best results.
McKinney won four of her six races, while Mace earned two victories and claimed four second-place finishes. The pair qualified to the Women’s Singlehanded Nationals in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 8-10.
The Cardinal men also had a strong showing in Southern California, claiming three of the top four spots at the PCCSC Men’s Singlehanded Championships. Oliver Toole sailed to a first-place finish, winning his final race on the day to finish with 31 points, edging UC Santa Barbara’s Stephen Long (32) for the top spot. Toole’s clutch finish earned him a spot at the Men’s Singlehanded Nationals.
Mateo Vargas nearly qualified to the national championship regatta, finishing third with 33 points – one point shy of Long. Vargas recorded two wins and finished in the top five in each of his 12 races.
Vargas was followed closely by teammate Kieran Chung, who placed fourth with 38 points. Chung led the Cardinal with four individual victories.

Stanford raced to a second-place finish with 161 points at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy in Providence, R.I. The Cardinal garnered 161 points, trailing only Yale with 103 points.
Racing 420 boats, Hans Henken and Kelly Ortel managed an eighth-place division-A finish in a deep field of 18 teams. Henken and Ortel earned three top-five finishes, including one victory, in 12 races to finish with 102 points.
Antoine Screve and Yuri Namikawa sailed to a second-place finish in division-B with 59 points – just 13 points behind Yale. Screve and Namikawa earned nine top-five finishes and one victory.

Maeve White and Michelle Catania highlighted the Cardinal’s weekend at the Stu Nelson intersectional regatta in New London, Conn., with a second-place finish in division-A. White and Catania sailed to eight top-10 and three top-five finishes, earning 72 points – five points shy of the first-place U.S. Naval Academy.
Cally Tullo and Katie Walker placed 15th in division-B, finishing with 129 points. The quartet combined to finish 13th overall.
Stanford will look to continue its momentum as it travels to the Victoria Urn regatta at Cambridge, Mass., next weekend.
