BOSTON, Mass. - The top-ranked Stanford lightweight I Eight took second to No. 2 Harvard Sunday in Boston.
Stanford returns to action next weekend for the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma.
The Cardinal, which finished in 7:11, six seconds back of Harvard, did finish six seconds ahead of No. 3 Princeton and 16 seconds in front of No. 9 Boston University.
The II Eight finished third in its race in 7:38, 13 seconds behind Harvard and five seconds back of Princeton.
With its weekend schedule limited to just one race Sunday due to the manhunt of Tuesday's Boston Marathon bombing suspects, the Cardinal I Eight fell behind Harvard early in the race. Despite multiple attempts by the Cardinal to gain ground on the Crimson, the Harvard crew was able to answer each challenge and move on to the win.
"Hopefully, this was an eye opener for us," said Stanford lightweight rowing head coach Al Acosta. "Harvard attacked early and was clearly the more aggressive crew. We have some work to do."
