Split Squads Invade U.S. Tracks

Is it possible to be in multiple places at the same time? Yes, if you’re the Stanford track and field team. The Cardinal will be in three places at once when it competes in indoor meets at Penn State, Arkansas, and Washington on Friday and Saturday.

The following is a Stanford-centric breakdown of each:

PENN STATE NATIONAL

City: University Park, Pa.

Site: Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track

Track characteristics: 200-meter polyurethane surface with hydraulically banked turns that adjust to the race.

Notes: Stanford brings its sprinters and distance runners, 26 athletes in all, to a meet that will be crucial in earning possible NCAA qualifying marks. Kathy Kroeger, for instance, will make a charge at 3,000 meters. The top 16 marks recorded in from across the country in each event by March 2 will earn advancement to the nationals. Also, this will be Stanford’s only meet on a short banked track before competing on a similar track in Albuquerque, N.M., at the NCAA’s on March 14-15. Sophomore Steven Solomon, Stanford’s 2012 Olympic 400 finalist, is expected to make his collegiate indoor debut in an individual event when he runs the invitational 500 on Saturday. The men's and women's distance medley relays also will be an emphasis. Stanford is traditionally strong nationally in the DMR and will shoot for strong times and passage to Albuquerque.
