SEATTLE – Stanford head coach Kristen Smyth earned the 200th victory of her coaching career, as the No. 12 Cardinal posted its second-highest team score of the season to beat No. 24 Washington, 196.825-196.200.
The Cardinal (11-1, 3-1 Pac-12) outscored the GymDawgs (2-4, 0-3 Pac-12) in three of four events and Stanford gymnasts recorded individual victories in each event.
Sitting at 199 wins entering the night, Stanford left no doubt that Smyth would leave the Emerald City with No. 200 – taking the early lead and remaining in front for the duration of the competition.
Kristina Vaculik continued to be a rock for the Cardinal, putting together an outstanding all-around performance to earn a collegiate-best 39.600. Vaculik claimed individual victories on bars (9.925, tied collegiate best), beam (9.925, collegiate best) and floor (9.900).
Vaculik has scored 9.800 or higher in 19 of 21 events this season and accumulated nine scores of 9.900 or higher in the past four meets.
Stanford got off to a great start on bars, with Shona Morgan posting a 9.875 in the leadoff position to finish second, followed by a collegiate-best 9.825 by Taylor Rice. Vaculik delivered her meet-best performance in the anchor position, following a fall by the gymnast before her, to give Stanford the early lead, 49.275-48.875.
The Cardinal’s bars score of 49.275 is the team’s second-highest on the year.
Stanford continued its hot start on vault with Nicolette McNair claiming her fourth consecutive individual win with a 9.900. She was followed by Danielle McNair and Vaculik who both scored 9.850 to tie for third. Rice helped add to the lead, posting a season-best 9.825.
Vaculik led the way on floor (9.900), followed by a season-best 9.875 from Shona Morgan to place second. Pauline Hanset also contributed a strong performance to earn a 9.850.
The Cardinal continued to roll on beam, highlighted by top-two performances from Vaculik (9.925) and Amanda Spinner (9.900). Nicolette McNair, Morgan and Rice tied for fourth with scores of 9.825.
Stanford finished with a 49.300 on beam – the second-highest score in the event on the season.
The Cardinal plays host to Utah next Monday at 2 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. It will be the Utes first trip to Stanford since March 6, 1998, which the Cardinal won, 195.550-194.875.
