NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Chris Viall and Logan James limited Vanderbilt to three runs on five hits in the first seven innings, but the Commodores played strong defensively to beat Stanford, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt added two runs in the eighth, while the Cardinal was held off the board after the fifth inning.
“I thought James pitched well and I thought Viall, once he settled in, was alright,” said Mark Marquess, The Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “We just haven’t done much with the bat. We only got three hits, only one run. We stayed close for a little bit, but we just haven’t swung the bat very well this weekend at all.”
Zach Hoffpauir picked up two hits, including an RBI triple, but that was the extent of success for the Stanford offense.
Hoffpauir’s triple came after Austin Barr walked to start the fifth inning with Vanderbilt leading 2-0. The ball rolled all the way to the wall in the left center gap to score Barr easily, as Hoffpauir hustled out of the box and into third with an aggressive head-first slide to beat the relay.
The hit cut Vanderbilt’s lead to 2-1, but Stanford (4-6) went down in order and stranded Hoffpauir at third.
Viall (1-1) went back to the mound to start the fifth before giving way to Logan James after allowing a hit and a walk to start the frame. James entered with a 3-0 count to the Commodores’ Dansby Swanson and issued ball four to load the bases with no outs.
With Vanderbilt (9-2) ready to break the game open, James allowed just one run to score during the Commodores’ threat. The lefty worked 3.0 innings, while allowing just two hits and two runs to keep Stanford in the game.
Alex Dunlap had Stanford’s other hit and also walked twice. The freshman, who is five for his last nine, earned his third start of the season in right field.
Sam Lindquist worked the eighth and allowed no runs on one hit.
Viall took the loss after throwing four innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Jared Miller (3-0) remained undefeated for Vanderbilt as he threw five innings and allowed one run.
Stanford is back at Hawkins Field tomorrow for the third game of the series against Vanderbilt. Cal Quantrill will start the 10 a.m. PT contest.
