STANFORD, Calif. – USC scored six unanswered runs, after Stanford broke out to a 3-0 lead, to take the rubber match of a three-game set at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond, 6-3, in 10 innings. In front of a season-high 1,973 fans, Chris Viall allowed just one run on one hit in six innings of work before the Trojans came back for the win.
“(Viall) pitched great,” said Mark Marquess, The Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “Normally that’s good enough to win. He did a great job for us.”
Stanford (8-10 overall, 1-2 Pac-12) scored two in the first and another in the second to build the three-run advantage, while Viall kept the Trojans hitless through the first five innings.
Alex Dunlap delivered a two-run double to the wall with the bases loaded in the first frame. He smashed the first pitch of USC starter Jeff Paschke to the fence, where left fielder Omar Cotto could not haul it in as he slammed into the wall.
A sac fly off the bat of Danny Diekroeger scored Stanford’s final run of the day in the second inning. The Cardinal was hindered by eight men left on base, including a bases-loaded one-out chance in the fifth.
“We had opportunities to score other runs and we didn’t,” Marquess noted. “We let them stay close and that hurt us.”
The only blemish on Viall’s line was a leadoff home run from Vahn Bozoian in his last inning on the bump. He had struck out the side in the fourth and worked through the fifth easily, but was taken out after six due to his pitch count reaching 95.
Viall’s five strikeouts doubles his season total to 10.
USC (12-10 overall, 3-3 Pac-12) tied it with two in the eighth, both on sacrifice flies, before sending three runners across the plate in the 10th to finish the comeback. Jake Hernandez started the extra inning with a double to right that lifted reliever Logan James, who ended up taking the loss to drop to 0-1. A walk, two hits and a suicide squeeze off of Marcus Brakeman made it 6-3.
Stanford was held at bay by relievers Kyle Twomey and Kyle Davis, who partnered to go 8.2 innings. Davis (1-0) took the win by throwing the last three innings, as neither USC reliever allowed a run.
The Trojans won their first series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in their last four tries. USC had not won a three-game set at Stanford since 2007.
The Cardinal goes on the road Tuesday to face St. Mary’s. The team’s next home game is Friday night against Oregon to start a three-game series.
