STANFORD, Calif. - Chiney Ogwumike notched her 25th double-double of the year, pacing No. 6/5 Stanford to an 82-57 rout of No. 14/15 Penn State on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion in the first of two NCAA semifinals in the Stanford Regional.
Ogwumike produced game-high totals in points (29) and rebounds (15) while Mikaela Ruef added a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Stanford (32-3), which awaits the winner of South Carolina and North Carolina in Tuesday's regional final, shot 46.9 percent overall and held a 41-33 rebounding edge. The Cardinal also received 18 points from Amber Orrange and 11 points from Lili Thompson.
Trailing 23-21 with 8:51 remaining in the first half, Stanford used a 23-7 scoring run to take a 44-30 lead into the break. Ogwumike was the only Cardinal player in double figures through the first 20 minutes with 13 points on 6-13 shooting.
The Cardinal maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game, stretching its lead to 20 at the 5:10 mark following a layup from Thompson to make it 71-51.
Orrange knocked down the second of two free throws with 2:09 remaining to give Stanford its largest lead of the game at 82-54.
Stanford connected on 17-21 from the foul line, boosted by Ogwumike's 9-10 clip.
The Cardinal defense racked up eight steals, forcing the Lady Lions into 15 turnovers. Additionally, Penn State leading scorer Maggie Lucas was held scoreless in the second half and finished with six points on 3-14 shooting, thanks mainly to constant pressure from Thompson.
The Lady Lions (24-8) were led by 22 points from Ariel Edwards, one of three players to score in double figures.
Stanford is unbeaten at home this season (15-0) and also in the NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion since a second-round shocker by Florida State in 2007. The Cardinal has won 29 of 33 tournament games on campus overall.
