STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford could not finish a series sweep of No. 11 Oregon, as the Ducks rallied for seven runs in the second inning en route to a 9-2 win Sunday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal won the three-game set after sweeping a doubleheader on Friday.
Stanford (10-11, 3-3 Pac-12) used seven relievers in the game, its most of the 2014 campaign. Chris Viall (1-2) was tagged for four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings and Logan James allowed four runs in the second inning without getting an out, as Oregon jumped to an 8-0 lead.
It was an uncharacteristic bad start for Stanford, which had seen its starters work at least six innings in six straight games.
The offense for the Ducks (19-8, 6-3 Pac-12) was shut down by the rest of the bullpen, minus a home run by Shaun Chace in the eighth, but the lead proved insurmountable for Stanford.
Oregon totaled five singles, a double, a hit by pitch and another runner reached on a fielder’s choice in the difference-making second inning.
The Cardinal was limited to seven hits, including an Austin Slater solo home run in the fourth to get Stanford on the board. The offense remained quiet until the seventh, when Dominic Jose drove home Wayne Taylor, who had started the inning with a double.
Stanford kept the score reasonable thanks to Marcus Brakeman, Daniel Starwalt, Tyler Thorne and Griffin Weir finishing innings two through seven on the mound. The four relievers that followed Viall and James went 5.3 innings, gave up just one hit, struck out three and walked two.
The Ducks were led by Chase and Tyler Baumgartner, who each had two hits. Baumgartner also picked up three RBI, including two on a second-inning single.
Chase’s homer came off Gabe Cramer, who threw 0.2 innings. Chris Castellanos finished the final 1.1 without allowing a hit.
Jeff Gold (7-0) went 6.1 innings while giving up seven hits and two runs to remain undefeated for Oregon.
The Cardinal’s next stop is Berkeley, Calif., for a date with Cal on Tuesday on Pac-12 Networks. The team is at Oregon State April 4-6 and returns home to face UC Davis April 8.
