BERKELEY, Calif. – Mark Marquess added to his historic coaching resume with his 1,500th career win Tuesday night. Stanford broke out for 11 runs on 12 hits to give Marquess the milestone victory with a 11-1 win at rival California’s Evans Diamond.
"It has been great," Marquess, The Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball, said with a smile while reflecting on 1,500 wins. "I've had a lot of great players go through the program."
Marquess joins a group of just five other NCAA coaches with 1,500 wins. Among active coaches, only Texas' Augie Garrido and Florida State's Mike Martin have more.
It has been 38 years since the Stanford graduate won his first game as the Cardinal's skipper. He said of that day in 1977, "I can't remember it. I really can't. It was a long time ago. When I'm done, then I can look back at it and hopefully I've won more than I lose."
Alex Blandino led the attack with a career-high four RBI after getting hits in his first three at-bats. The junior third baseman doubled down the left field line in the first to start the scoring for the Cardinal, before finding the right field line on an RBI single in the fifth and going back to the left field line for another single in the fourth.
Brett Michael Doran, Austin Barr and Zach Hoffpauir also had multiple hits for the Cardinal.
Freshman Tyler Thorne (2-0) picked up the win after an efficient five innings on the mound. The Lubbock, Texas, native kept California off balance, while allowing just three hits and striking out four to lower his ERA to 1.88.
Thorne was aided by seven Stanford runs in the first three innings. Stanford sprayed the ball to both corners of the outfield to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and then circled the bases thanks to hard-hit balls and Cal miscues for five more in the third.
Eight players came to the plate, three produced hits, two reached on errors and one walked, as Stanford was also helped by a wild pitch and a balk. Third-inning hits came from Blandino and Zach Hoffpauir, who tripled for an RBI, before Drew Jackson brought the final run home on a two-out RBI bunt single.
Stanford added two in the sixth and another in the seventh to get 11 runs, one short of its season high.
Daniel Starwalt, John Hochstatter and A.J. Vanegas finished the rout on the bump. Starwalt and Vanegas each threw one inning. Hochstatter worked the two frames between them.
The Cardinal is back at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond this weekend for a three-game series against Kansas.
