STANFORD, Calif. – California plated a run in the eighth and three more in the 10th to come from behind and beat Stanford, 7-4, Saturday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal snapped a seven-game winning streak over Cal in front of 1,950 fans.
“We came back and had the lead, they just did a better job of hitting in the clutch than we did.” said Mark Marquess, the Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “We gave them a couple walks, which hurt us.”
Stanford (17-18, 6-10 Pac-12) held a 4-3 lead going into the eighth inning, after trailing 3-1 after four, but closer A.J. Vanegas (1-2) could not hold on. The senior walked the first batter he faced in the eighth to set the table for Cal to tie the game, as Vanegas allowed an earned run for the first time this season.
The Cardinal caught a break in the 10th inning, but was once again stricken by a walk. After Aaron Knapp singled, Derek Campbell ran out of the box into his own bunted ball to be called out for interference and send Knapp back to first. Vanegas then walked Nick Halamandaris, essentially giving back the Bears’ blunder, before two straight singles gave Cal the lead and eventual win.
Starting pitcher Cal Quantrill had Stanford with the advantage by allowing three runs on four hits over seven innings. Quantrill left with the lead after the Cardinal rallied for two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Brett Michael Doran tripled to left center in the fifth to drive in Tommy Edman, who had reached base for the seventh straight at-bat with a single to center. Doran then scored on a sac fly from Danny Diekroger.
Edman is hitting .471 (8-17) since April 17. He also added his third steal of the season, all in the last two games, before scoring Stanford’s first run in the third.
In the sixth, Brant Whiting provided a two-out single to center to score Austin Slater.
Although Stanford did get 12 hits in the game, the Cardinal stranded 12 runners on its way to four runs. Diekroeger led the way with three hits, while Edman, Whiting and Alex Dunlap each had two. The Cardinal lost while scoring more than three runs for the first time this season.
California (17-20, 6-10 Pac-12) was led in hitting by Brenden Farney, who was the lone player with two hits in the lineup. Farney had both of his singles off of Vanegas, including the game-winner on a line drive to left center in the 10th.
Trevor Hildenberger (3-2) picked up the win in 2.2 innings of shutout relief. He followed Dylan Nelson’s 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
Daulton Jefferies started for the Bears and went six frames, while allowing eight hits and four runs.
The two teams are back for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. in a game televised on Pac-12 Networks. John Hochstatter (5-1, 2.18) will face Kyle Porter (4-4, 2.97).
