STANFORD, Calif. – John Hochstatter allowed just one run in his second career complete-game effort and Tommy Edman blasted a three-run home run as Stanford beat California, 4-1, before 2,447 fans Sunday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal evened the series with the Bears before tomorrow’s 6 p.m. finale.
“I think if we take this series tomorrow it would be big for us,” said Hochstatter. “I think with this team and how we’re playing we can keep it going from here.”
Hochstatter (6-1) stayed away from hard contact by mixing speeds in the zone. He struck out three and walked only one, while the Cardinal defense played flawlessly behind him.
The lefty was quick to credit his teammates saying, “Again, it’s the defense. Without them going errorless it could have been a totally different game.”
Stanford (18-18, 7-10 Pac-12) played errorless for fourth time in the last six games. Entering today, the Cardinal’s .990 fielding percentage in conference games was the best in the Pac-12.
Tommy Edman provided Hochstatter with all the support he needed by blasting a first-pitch fastball over the left field wall with the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth. Edman’s first career long ball came with runners on the corners and was part of a two-hit day for the freshman.
“I was just looking for something to hit hard,” said Edman. “Luckily I got a pitch up that I could drive and I put a good swing on it.”
Edman has gone 10-22 in the last seven games on his way to a season-best seven-game hitting streak.
Danny Diekroeger, Zach Hoffpauir and Brant Whiting also contributed two hits apiece for the Cardinal. Stanford totaled 11 knocks on the day, marking the third time in the last four outings the lineup has gone for double-digit hits.
California (17-21, 6-11 Pac-12) could only find five hits off of Hochstatter, four of which came in the first two innings. The Bears only run came off of three hits in the first, before a groundout with two runners on got Stanford out of the inning.
Hochstatter retired the final 13 batters, as Cal managed to get only two runners to second base after the first inning. He lowered his team-best ERA to 1.93 in the process.
Stanford tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Whiting. Edman followed with a single, but Brett Michael Doran lined into an unlucky double play straight to the first baseman to keep the score knotted.
