Beavers Take Extras

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Cal Quantrill and A.J. Vanegas dominated Oregon State hitters for 12 innings, but the Beavers snuck past Stanford, 1-0, in the 13th Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium. Jeff Hendrix provided a bases-loaded RBI single to finish the game 3:34 after the first pitch.

Quantrill turned in one of the best outings of his young career by going eight innings without surrendering a run. He allowed just three hits and struck out six, while walking two, to shut down the Beavers lineup from top to bottom before handing it over to Vanegas.

Vanegas (0-1) was nearly just as good, as the Beavers produced three hits off of him in four innings. Two of those singles came in the final frame to drop Stanford to 1-3 in extra-inning contests.

The Cardinal (10-13, 3-5 Pac-12) threatened early and often against Oregon State starter Andrew Moore, who was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2013. The Cardinal had at least one base runner in each of Moore’s seven innings of work, but could not find a timely hit, as the game stayed scoreless.

Moore stranded 10 Stanford base runners, while throwing 123 pitches.  

As Oregon State (24-6, 8-3 Pac-12) labored through the first eight, Quantrill cruised. Stanford’s 23rd straight freshman starting pitcher allowed just one hit until the fifth when the Beavers loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Quantrill worked out with a ground ball to keep the 0-0 pitchers’ duel alive.

The free pass ended a streak of 26.1 consecutive innings that Quantrill had not issued a walk. He struck out 23 batters during the run.

The extra innings went quickly with Vanegas battling and Stanford going hitless through the additional innings off of Scott Schultz (4-2).

Trever Morrison started Oregon State’s 13th with a single, before moving to second on a passed ball. He slid safely into third on a fielders’ choice sac bunt and scored on Hendrix line-drive single past a drawn in infield.  

Stanford has its last chance against Oregon State tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Cardinal will send Chris Viall (1-2, 4.26) to the hill to face Jace Fry (5-1, 1.81).
