TUCSON, Ariz. -- Five third-inning runs carried Stanford to a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon at Arizona’s Hi Corbett Field. Logan James shut out the Wildcats over the first six innings on his way to a career-high seven innings pitched, as the Cardinal won its second straight road series in Pac-12 play.
“It’s huge. It’s a big series win for us,” said Mark Marquess, the Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “Logan James did a great job and we took advantage of the one big inning and that was the difference in the game.”
James pitched into the eighth inning before getting pulled after the first two reached on a single and a walk. The sophomore left-hander put zeroes on the scoreboard until that point, as only three base runners reached second base in the first seven frames. He finished with seven innings pitched, six hits, two runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
Stanford (24-21, 11-13 Pac-12) scored all of its runs during an eight-batter stretch in the third inning. The Cardinal had three extra-base hits, including Alex Blandino’s Pac-12-leading eighth homer of the season, to power to a 5-0 lead.
Zach Hoffpauir led off the third with a triple down the left field line and came home to score on a sac fly from Wayne Taylor that the left fielder dropped then threw away to put Taylor on third base. Brett Michael Doran then lined a deep fly out to center to plate Taylor, before Danny Diekroeger got the inning going again with a walk. Blandino followed Diekroeger with his homer, then Austin Slater singled and Brant Whiting doubled him home.
Arizona (19-30, 8-19 Pac-12) threatened in the sixth by loading the bases, but three pitches to Willie Calhoun ended the jam on James’ first strikeout.
James turned over the game to the bullpen in the eighth and the Wildcats put three on the board. After the first two reached off James, Brett Hanewich came in and walked two to make it 5-1. Christopher Castellanos came in to work out with a fielder’s choice and two fly outs.
Castellanos stayed in to put down Arizona in order in the ninth. He earned his second save of the year with the two hitless innings.
Stanford is 13-5 since April 13, including an 8-2 mark away from Klein Field at Sunken Diamond, as it continues to climb back towards the NCAA postseason picture.
“It’s all RPI,” Marquess said about hopes of the tournament. “That’s why we didn’t make it last year even though we were 16-14 in the league. It’s just the opposite this year where our overall record isn’t as good, but our RPI is good. We’ll see if that makes a difference but we have to keep playing.”
The Cardinal comes home to host San Jose State (May 13), Washington State (May 16-18) and Pacific (May 20). The Friday, May 16 game against Washington State is the popular Fireworks Night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The final series of the year is May 23-25 at Utah.
