STANFORD, Calif. -- Cal Quantrill came through with a dominating eight-inning performance as Stanford took game one of its three-game set against Washington State, 5-2. Quantrill struck out a career-high 10 batters in front of a season-best, sellout crowd of 3,598 during Fireworks Night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
“I felt good,” said Quantrill after his fifth outing of seven innings or more. “The fastball was good, changeup was good and the slider was a nice change. I haven’t had it in the last couple games so it felt good to finally have that.”
Stanford (25-22, 12-13 Pac-12) continues to keep its postseason hopes alive with six games left in the season. The two remaining games of the series against the Cougars, dubbed as Dean Stotz Day and Senior Day, hold important NCAA implications.
Quantrill (4-5) allowed only four hits and one run, on a fifth-inning homer, en route to his fourth victory of the year. The freshman right-hander struck out at least one Cougar in all of his eight innings, including a punch out to end the inning in each of his final four frames.
Alex Blandino provided run support with the first two Stanford RBI and Zach Hoffpauir smashed a booming two-run homer to left field in the sixth to give Quantrill a 4-1 cushion. Blandino brought in runners on a first-inning sac fly and a third-inning double.
Tommy Edman, Austin Slater and Brant Whiting helped carry the lineup with two hits apiece, as Stanford out-hit its opponent for the 31st time in 47 games.
Washington State (22-26, 12-13 Pac-12) was limited to five hits, but nine-hole hitter Trace Tam Sing carried the Cougars with a 3-for-3 day. Tam Sing homered twice, once off Quantrill and once off reliever Chris Castellanos, to account for all of Washington State’s runs.
Castellanos finished the ninth with the one earned run and two strikeouts to give Stanford 12 for the day. He was denied a save opportunity when Brett Michael Doran plated an insurance run on a bases-loaded sac fly in the bottom of the eighth.
Tomorrow's game starts at 1 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. Lefty John Hochstatter (8-1, 1.96) looks to keep the Cardinal going against left-hander Jason Monda (2-5, 3.33).
