BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Austin Slater drilled an RBI double and a solo home run, but Indiana knocked off Stanford, 4-2, Saturday evening. John Hochstatter allowed four runs over 7.1 innings in front of 4,312 fans, a Bart Kaufman Field record, to lose for the first time since Feb. 15.
“They are a very veteran team, a lot of older players, and they are very dangerous throughout the lineup,” said Mark Marquess, the Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “They were better than they were tonight. They won the big spots and played better than we did.”
Indiana (43-13) never trailed on its way to the Bloomington Regional final. The Cardinal had the game tied in the first, 1-1, but single runs by the Hoosiers in the third, fifth and eighth doomed Stanford to tomorrow’s semifinal against Youngstown State (17-37) at 1 p.m. ET. The winner of Stanford versus Youngstown State faces Indiana at 6 p.m. ET.
“The good news is we didn't use a lot of arms tonight,” Marquess noted. “So we have enough arms. It's a doubleheader tomorrow hopefully for us if we can win the first one.”
Stanford (31-24) was outhit, 10-7, to snap a seven-game regional winning streak dating back to 2010. Slater and Tommy Edman each had two hits. Edman doubled to lead off the eighth and Taylor did the same with two outs in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate in both situations, but neither could get past third base.
Indiana’s ace, Joey DeNato, went 7.1 innings, while allowing two runs on six hits to pick up the win. The left-hander kept Stanford off-balance, before giving way to Jake Kelzer, who finished the game for his third save.
“I thought their pitcher did a great job, said Marquess. “I thought their lefty was really tough. We really didn't have many opportunities. We got a couple of big hits by Slater, but he really baffled us a lot.”
Slater’s knocks came in the first, a two-out double, and the fifth, a solo homer to nearly the same spot in left center, but over the wall. He extended his career-long hitting streak to 19 games.
Indiana was led by Sam Travis’ three-hit day. Travis blasted a solo homer in the fifth inning and also added a third-inning RBI single.
Youngstown State will start right-hander Ryan Krokos (0-4, 8.25). The Cardinal has not yet announced a starter, but could go with lefty Logan James (3-3, 4.13) or righty Brett Hanewich (3-4, 3.66), Marquess said at his press conference.
