Stanford's National Championship History:

Stanford was one of the collegiate track and field’s first powers, winning three NCAA men’s titles from 1925-34. The Cardinal has returned to strength in recent years, winning a men’s championship in 2000. Over the past 16 years (since 1998), Stanford’s teams have combined for 21 top-10 team finishes -- 11 for the women and 10 for the men.
Stanford has won 62 individual outdoor championships. The men claim 44 titles by 34 individuals. The women have won 18 titles by 14 individuals. Stanford has had three champions in the past two years: Kori Carter (2013 women’s 400 hurdles), Amaechi Morton (2012 men’s 400 hurdles), and Katerina Stefanidi (2012 women’s pole vault).

Returning Finalists:

Brianna Bain: Stanford’s women’s team returns two NCAA outdoor finalists -- junior javelin thrower Brianna Bain and sophmore 800-meter runner Amy Weissenbach.
Bain is a two-time first-team All-America. The Beaverton, Ore., native was third last year, throwing 176-1. As a freshman in 2012, Bain finished second in dramatic fashion when she threw personal record 180-2 on her sixth and final throw -- more than 12 feet farther than her second-best of the day.
Amy Weissenbach: Weissenbach was sixth in the NCAA’s outdoors as a freshman last year, in 2:02.29, which earned her passage to the USATF Championships. There in Des Moines, Weissenbach ran a personal best of 2:00.98 to advance to the final. The time broke the national freshman record of 2:01.6 that had been held by Tennessee State’s Madeline Manning since 1967. Weissenbach joined Oregon’s Laura Roesler as the only collegians in the USATF final, with Weissenbach placing seventh.
At the 2014 NCAA indoor championships, Weissenbach focused on the distance medley relay, which finished second, rather than run the 800.

Fastest in the Country:
Stanford junior Aisling Cuffe (pronounced “Ashling Cuff”) became the third-fastest collegian of all-time and the second-fastest American collegian when she ran a 15:11.13 for 5,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford on May 4. That time not only makes her the fastest active collegian in the country, but it broke the school and Pac-12 Conference record held of 15:12.71 held by three-time NCAA outdoor 5,000 champion Lauren Fleshman. Cuffe was the 2013 Pac-12 cross country champion and placed fourth at the NCAA cross country championships last fall. Cuffe was second to Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino in the 2014 NCAA indoor 5,000.

The Rosa Brothers:
Stanford junior twins Jim and Joe Rosa have emerged this academic year to become two of the top distance runners in the nation, both earning their first All-America honors. Jim, who will run the 10,000, was the top American-born runner at last fall’s NCAA cross country championships, placing fifth. He also was runner-up to Oregon’s Edward Cheserek in both the Pac-12 and NCAA West Regional cross country meets.
While Jim redshirted the 2014 indoor season because of injury, Joe placed fifth in the NCAA indoor 5,000, the distance he will run this week. At the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 4, Joe ripped off a 13:33.56 in the 5,000, placing him No. 8 on a stacked school all-time list. The time is the fourth-fastest season-best in the NCAA field.

Brooks Line:
Darian Brooks has thrust himself into podium contention in the men’s triple jump. Brooks, a junior, missed last season with an injury that limited him to one non-postseason meet this outdoor season. However, he set four personal bests at the Pac-12 championships, winning with a final jump of 52-6 3/4, a school record.
