BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tommy Edman hit a walk-off two-run home run to turn a one-run deficit into a 5-4 win over No. 4 national seed Indiana Monday night at Bart Kaufman Field. The freshman sends Stanford to the NCAA Super Regional next weekend in Nashville to face Vanderbilt in a best-of-three series. 

“It was a fantastic win for us,” said Mark Marquess, the Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “Very proud of our team the way we battled back, and we beat an outstanding team.”

Edman, a switch-hitter, blasted a home run from the left side of the plate for the first time in his life, he said after the game. It came on the first pitch of the at-bat with one out and Drew Jackson on second base, after Jackson pinch ran for Wayne Taylor, who had singled to start the frame.


The freshman shortstop said he was, “just trying to get on base to be honest. Home run was the last thing I expected. Just a pitch I could drive, and luckily I got a good fastball to hit and able to put a good swing on it.”

Fellow freshman Cal Quantrill (7-5) won for the second time in the Bloomington Regional by going 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out three on two days rest. 

“Coach and I have a good working relationship. We talked about it,” Quantrill said. “We knew what I had left. I was begging to start, but they probably did the right thing waiting on that. That was perfect.”

“I was real proud of him,” Marquess said of Quantrill’s effort. “But proud of everybody, because it's been a difficult year for us. We've had to really work and bounce back, and to come here ‑‑ to get to the regional and to come here and win it is something special.”

Logan James started for the second straight day, allowing one run in two innings, and Marcus Brakeman went 4.2 innings in long relief to help position Stanford for the win. 

Stanford (34-24) faced a 3-0 hole after two innings and was also sidelined with a nearly three-hour rain delay after Indiana’s Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer in the top of the third. The Cardinal spent the delay sheltered in Indiana’s softball clubhouse, regrouped, and came back out with two runs in the bottom of the third to quickly change the game.

Indiana (44-15), a College World Series participant a year ago, used a similar pitching plan as the Cardinal. Brian Korte went two innings, followed by Thomas Belcher for 4.2 and Scott Effross for the final 1.2 frames. 

Belcher was the most effective, allowing only a Dominic Jose solo homer to tie the game in the sixth, while Korte and Effross (5-3) both saw two runs come across. 

Stanford won for the second straight night after trailing in the eighth. Indiana entered yesterday 39-0 when leading after seven. 

Dates for next weekend’s three-game series will be released Tuesday morning.
