STANFORD, Calif. -- Taylor Uhl had three goals and an assist and Lo’eau LaBonta scored twice to lead No. 4 Stanford to a 7-0 Pac-12 women's soccer rout of winless Oregon State on Sunday.
Stanford (16-1-2 overall, 8-1-1 Pac-12) outshot Oregon State (0-16-3, 0-11-0) by 48-3, breaking the school record of 42, against Sacramento State in a 2010 NCAA first-round match.
The hat trick was the first at Stanford for Uhl, whose 54 career goals rank her No. 4 on the active NCAA Division I career list. Uhl has scored six goals in her past five matches, and her seven points in a match had only been achieved seven times in school history, most recently by Christen Press against Utah in 2010.
Uhl also became the 20th Stanford player to record a hat trick, and the second this season following two by sophomore Ryan Walker-Hartshorn.
This was the final regular-season home match for Stanford's seven graduating seniors -- plus Haley Rosen who will return for a fifth season – and seniors had every goal.
“Today was a celebration of the seniors,” Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “I was very happy to see them play with such emotion.”
Rosen and Chioma Ubogagu also scored for Stanford. In fact, Ubogagu’s was the most spectacular of the match as she dribbled through nearly the entire Beaver defense inside the box to set up a short-range shot that closed the scoring, in the 86th minute.
“Chi’s a special player and she can score unbelievable goals,” Ratcliffe said. “She has such great ability. That was a fantastic goal to watch.”
Lauren Schmidt earned her first two career assists. Others went to LaBonta, Rosen, Kendall Romine, and Laura Liedle, a junior.
For Romine, it was the 100th victory in the Stanford career of the fifth-year senior. Romine, a starter on the Cardinal's 2011 NCAA championship team, is 100-10-7.
Stanford blasted out of the gate with two Uhl goals in the first eight minutes. Schmidt, making her first career start, set up Uhl with the first goal, only 2:34 into the match with straight-on shot in the box. Uhl headed in Rosen’s corner at 7:49.
Though Ratcliffe substituted his starters for much of the match, he put all his seniors on the field together for the final 10 minutes and the Cardinal erupted for three superb goals.
Farr’s pass from the left was met by a gentle and composed full volley from Uhl for her third goal of the match. Moments later, Uhl made a touch back pass that LaBonta blasted in. Finally, it was Ubogagu’s turn with her weaving foray through the heart of the defense.
“I was so amped for today,” Schmidt said. “The underclassmen decorated the locker room and made it look amazing, with balloons all over the floor and posters for each senior. It really made us feel important. We were having a jam session before the game, pumping everyone up.
“The energy, just stepping on the field to warm up was crazy. It just kept building. By the time we got on the field to start the game, it was just ours for the taking.”
“It was incredible. We really wanted to go out with a bang and that’s what we did.”
The Cardinal closes out the regular season Thursday (2 p.m.) at California. With a victory, Stanford can catch first-place UCLA if the Bruins lose at USC on Friday, tying them for the title.
Either way, Stanford is expected to play host to a first-round NCAA tournament match on Friday, Nov. 14.
