SEATTLE – The last time Olivia Baker competed on the track, it was the second leg of the women’s 4x400-meter relay at the IAAF World Junior Championships at Hayward Field.
Baker increased a small lead at the exchange into a 10-meter gap and the United States went on to capture the gold medal.
Earlier, at the same meet, Harrison Williams placed sixth in the decathlon while setting a national high school record.
On Saturday, Baker and Williams make their first appearances in Stanford uniforms at the UW Indoor Preview at the Dempsey Indoor facility.
Elise Cranny, who starred for the Cardinal in cross country, makes her first Stanford appearance on the track. She used a strong kick in the 1,500 to pass two down the homestretch and capture fourth place at world juniors and finish as the top non-African in the field.

Women’s notes: Olivia Baker will make her first Stanford appearance in the 600 (1:25 p.m.) and also will run a leg on the 4x400. Cranny, the Pac-12 cross country runner-up, is scheduled to run the 1,000 (11:40 a.m.), the 4x400 and the 4x800. In fact, Stanford’s 4x800 is comprised entirely of freshmen: Cranny, Maddy Berkson, Claire Howlett, and Anna Laman, an Australian who also was a World Junior finalist in the 1,500. Malika Waschmann, a sophomore who focused on the 400 hurdles last year, has switched to the 800 and will be racing in the 600 and the 4x400. A veteran to watch will be fifth-year Jessica Tonn, who last competed in the U.S. national outdoor championships in June and placed ninth in the 5,000. Tonn, who had already exhausted her eligibility in cross country last fall, will run the mile (noon).
Men’s notes: U.S. junior decathlon champ and national high school record-holder Harrison Williams opens his collegiate career with three events: the 60 hurdles, pole vault, and 4x400. Williams scored 7,760 points at world juniors. Williams also heads a strong pole vault quartet that will compete Saturday. Williams (16-8 best) joins teammates Dalton Duvio (17-1) and Garrett Starkey (17-0), who return after redshirt seasons. Dylan Duvio, an outdoor All-America as a freshman last season, is redshirting this season. The meet also marks the first collegiate track competitions for cross country All-America Sean McGorty (mile, 4x800) and his teammate on Stanford’s NCAA runner-up cross-country team, Jack Keelan (mile, 4x800). Jaak Uudmae, a redshirt freshman, is among those making a debut. Uudmae (long jump) is the son of 1980 Soviet Olympic triple jump gold medalist of the same name.
