STANFORD, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford registered a season-best team score of 437.550 to place second Saturday night against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 6 California and No. 10 Nebraska.
The Cardinal (4-1, 3-1 MPSF) held a 366.950-365.650 lead over the top-ranked Sooners (5-0, 3-0 MPSF) entering the final rotation but Oklahoma capitalized on a strong floor lineup to earn the comeback win.
The Sooners placed first with a 440.550, followed by Stanford, California (423.550) and Nebraska (418.050).
Stanford produced season-bests in floor (75.750), pommel horse (70.300), rings (74.050) and vault (74.700). The Cardinal’s score on vault was a meet high. Stanford tied Oklahoma for the highest score on parallel bars with a 73.150.
“We’re a young team so we’re working on building confidence and competing under pressure,” said Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi. “The team is learning how to compete successfully and aggressively.”
Akash Modi continued his hot start to the season, earning individual victories in the all-around (90.150), parallel bars (15.450) and pommel horse (14.800). He placed second on high bar with a 14.650 and fourth on rings with a 15.050. Modi has recorded the highest scores in the all-around and parallel bars in all three meets this season.
Sean Senters remained undefeated on vault this year, tying for first with a season-best 15.400. Senters also contributed scores on floor (14.800), high bar (14.050) and pommel horse (13.700).
Stanford got off to a quick start in the first rotation on floor, scoring a season-best 74.750. Modi and Robert Neff paced the Cardinal with scores of 15.200. Ryan Sheppard also had a strong night with a career-best 15.150, followed by Senters (14.800) and Jonathan Deaton (14.400).
Modi led Stanford on pommel horse with a meet-best 14.800, followed by Brian Knott who tied for third with a season-best 14.500.
The Cardinal continued to roll on rings, led by Modi’s 15.050 to place fourth. Brandon Beckhardt and Jordan DeClerk earned season-best scores of 15.000 and 14.800, respectively.
Despite the fast start, Stanford trailed Oklahoma 221.350-219.100 at the midway point of the meet.
The Cardinal exploded on vault to earn a season-best 74.700. Senters tied for first with a 15.400 and was followed by Modi (15.000), Sheppard (14.850) and Gabe Flores (14.750).
Modi led Stanford on parallel bars for the third consecutive meet with a 15.450 to place first. Knott was close behind with a 15.300 to place second. Neff and Sheppard delivered solid routines to earn scores of 14.250 and 14.600, respectively.
The Cardinal entered the final rotation with a slight edge against Oklahoma, but the Sooners produced a strong floor routine to halt the upset. Modi led Stanford with a 14.650 and was followed by Neff with a 14.500.
Stanford will have a week off before returning to action at Michigan on Feb. 7.
