STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men’s gymnast Akash Modi set an NCAA record on parallel bars to propel No. 4 Stanford to a season-best 442.000-407.550 victory against Arizona State on Friday night in Burnham Pavilion.

Performing in the fifth position on parallel bars, Modi delivered an outstanding routine and drilled the landing to earn an NCAA-best 16.150. Modi’s score eclipsed previous record-holder Sam Mikulak of Michigan who went 16.100 on March 28, 2014.

Modi’s score helped Stanford break the 440-point team score mark for the first time this season. The Cardinal’s score of 442.000 is its highest since March 8, 2014, when it posted a 446.450 at home against Ohio State, California and Arizona State.

“We wanted to give some guys the opportunity before the five-up, five-count format begins to prove themselves and see how they handle themselves,” said Stanford head coach Thom Glielmi. “It was good to see those guys that haven’t necessarily been in the lineup step up and it's reflective of our depth.”

Sean Senters, Michael Levy and Brian Knott registered two individual event victories apiece. Knott earned wins in pommel horse (15.450) and high bar (14.950), while Levy claimed wins in floor (15.050) and rings (14.950).

Senters remained undefeated on vault this season with a 15.350, and earned a win in floor with a 15.050.

The Cardinal started the meet strong on floor punctuated by Senters and Levy. Jonathan Deaton and Drew Burton contributed scores of 14.450 and 14.400, respectively.

The Cardinal exploded on pommel horse, going six-for-six, to earn a season-best event score of 75.200. Knott anchored the lineup and earned a career-high 15.450. Akash Modi delivered a 15.300 – just .050 off his career best – to place second.

Senters contributed a career-high 14.900, while freshmen Ryan Sheppard (14.800) and Robert Neff (14.750) turned in strong performances.

“We’ve been good on horse in practice and tonight we saw each guy in the lineup comfortable and swinging really well,” said Glielmi. “With their execution, extension and difficulty, they’re one of the top teams in the NCAA in that event.”

Stanford continued its momentum on rings with five-of-five gymnasts scoring 14.100 or higher to earn a team-score of 72.500. Levy paced the Cardinal with a 14.950, followed by Jordan DeClerk (14.700) and Brandon Beckhardt (14.400).

Senters remained undefeated this season on vault, posting a meet-best 15.350 to help Stanford post a 74.400. Burton posted a season-best 14.900 in the leadoff position, while Taylor Seaton (14.650) and Brandon Beckhardt (14.350) also contributed nice performances.

The Cardinal dominated parallel bars, posting a season-high 75.600 behind a career-high 16.150 performance by Modi. Four Stanford gymnasts scored 15.000 or higher, including Knott (15.000), Sheppard (15.050) and Dennis Zaremski (15.050).

The Cardinal capped the meet with a 71.400 on high bar. Knott led the way with a 14.950, followed by Senters (14.300) and Neff (14.250).

Multiple Stanford gymnasts will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, next week for the Winter Cup Challenge. Stanford will resume collegiate competition Feb. 28, when it plays host to California, Minnesota, Japanese Collegiate National Team, Canadian Collegiate National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
