STANFORD, Calif. -- The California baseball team raced to an 11-0 lead in the fourth inning to beat Stanford 11-1 in a nonconference game at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond Monday afternoon. The Bears’ freshman cleanup hitter Brett Cumberland was the star of the game, blasting two home runs and driving in seven runs.

Stanford (1-3) freshman righty Keith Weisenberg surrendered a grand slam to Cumberland in the first inning and California never looked back. The Bears scored twice in the third and another five in the fourth, three of which came on Cumberland’s second homer to right field. Weisenberg (0-1) exited after 3.1 innings having allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits to take the loss in his collegiate debut.

California (2-2) made the most of its nine hits, as it left just three runners on base during the beautiful 70 degree Presidents Day afternoon. The Cardinal aided Cal’s offense with four walks, a hit batter and an error.

Stanford’s hitters were kept off balance by Cal freshman Matt Ladrech. The crafty lefty threw seven shutout innings to pick up the win, allowing only three singles, walking two and striking out four.

The Cardinal’s lone run came against righty sidewinder Jordan Talbot, who loaded the bases on a single, hit batter and walk, before being lifted in the eighth. Stanford finished with four hits by four different players. Drew Jackson reached three times, twice on walks and once on a single.

Daniel Starwalt was the first of five Cardinal relievers out of the bullpen. After he forced Cal in to one out, he allowed three runs on one hit and two walks before the ’pen started to settle down the Bears’ bats. Freshman Colton Hock came in and gave up Cumberland’s second bomb, but cruised to two 1-2-3 innings after the initial blow.

Gabe Cramer, Chris Viall and Andrew Summerville each tossed shutout innings of relief. Summerville struck out three batters in the ninth.

Jackson, Austin Barr, Matt Winaker and Jesse Kuet accounted for the Cardinal hits. Barr leads the team with a .400 average (4-10) after the first weekend of games.

Winaker will take a four-game hitting streak to Cal State Fullerton next weekend. Stanford opens a three-game set against the Titans Friday at 7 p.m. in Fullerton, California.
