STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford dropped a 198.050-195.900 decision at No. 4 Utah on Saturday despite a strong start on bars and vault.
The Cardinal (4-6-1, 2-4 Pac-12) hung tight with the Utes (9-0, 5-0 Pac-12) through the first half of the competition with nice showings of 49.250 on bars and 49.175 on vault. Stanford ran into some adversity on the backend of the competition, counting a fall on floor and beam.
Despite the loss, there were multiple individual highlight performances as six Cardinal gymnasts registered at least one top-five finish.
Stanford started the meet on bars and was led by Samantha Shapiro who scored 9.900 to place fifth. Taylor Rice finished sixth with a 9.875 and was followed by Kristina Vaculik who scored a season-best 9.850. Rebecca Wing also turned in a nice performance to earn a 9.825 and help get the Cardinal off to a strong start.
Elizabeth Price paced Stanford on vault with a 9.925 to tie for third. Pauline Hanset and Nicolette McNair contributed strong performances to each score 9.825. Danielle McNair and Rice both scored 9.800 to help keep the Cardinal within striking distance of the Utes.
Stanford ran into a bit of trouble on floor when two gymnasts missed their routines. The Cardinal did their best to pick up their teammates, including Shapiro and Rachel Daum who tied for third with scores of 9.875. Daum’s score is a season best.
The Cardinal continued to battle and three gymnasts claimed top-three finishes on beam to close the meet. Rice led Stanford with a 9.900 to finish second, while Nicolette McNair and Ivana Hong registered scores of 9.875 to tie for third.
Stanford will return home for its next meet when it plays host to Washington on March 2 at 7 p.m. in a meet televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
