Victorious in Home Finale

STANFORD, Calif. – In its final home dual of the season, the Stanford wrestling team defeated San Francisco State, 35-7, Sunday, on Senior Day in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal improves to 11-2 overall, while the Gators fall to 8-5.

Stanford’s four seniors, Jordan Bryan, Josh Lauderdale, Alex Manley and Garrett Schaner were honored prior to the start of the dual. Bryan, Schaner and Lauderdale also got things started for the Cardinal at 141, 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.

Wrestling in his final home dual, Bryan fell 19-7 to San Francisco State’s Jerry DeLaRosa, giving the Gators the early advantage.

Schaner propelled the Cardinal to a 6-4 lead in the team race as he pinned Dylan Furtado in 2:59. It marks the third fall of the season for the fifth-year senior as he moves to 18-12 overall and 8-4 in duals.

After a setback at 157 pounds, where Lauderdale dropped a 6-0 decision to Alex Abono, put the Gators back on top 7-6. Sophomore Matt Garelli received a forfeit victory at 165 pounds to give Stanford the lead for good.

Junior Dylan Morris registered his 12th win of the year with a commanding 8-1 decision against Calvin Nicholls at 174 pounds. He led 5-0 going into the final period in which Nicholls chose to start in the neutral position. Morris recorded another takedown and tacked on 2:57 of riding time for his second dual win of the season.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Nevills increased the Stanford lead to 19-7 with a 14-4 major decision over Johnny Costa at 184 pounds. Nevills scored a takedown in the opening period and then twice turned Costa for three near fall points to push his lead to 8-0 after the first. Three escapes in the second and a takedown in the third sealed the win along with 2:16 of riding time.

Redshirt freshman Garet Krohn picked up an injury default win over Andrew Reggi at 197 pounds. Krohn was leading 4-2 in the second before Reggi used injury time. Krohn chose to start in the down position after the break and quickly scored an escape. Another takedown for Krohn was too much for Reggi as he could down return.

At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Josh Marchok outworked his much-bigger opponent in Sam Alnassiri. After no score in the first period, Marchok elected to go down to start the second. He managed to register an escape and then a takedown for a 3-0 lead. In the third, Alnassiri got on the board with an escape, but Marchok won a flurry with another takedown. He finished off Alnassiri, 7-2, with a takedown as time was expiring. Marchok moves to 15-6 on the season and 3-0 in duals.

At 125 pounds, redshirt junior Evan Silver snapped a two-match skid with a dominating 14-5 major decision over Brandon Vu. He led 4-1 after the first and pushed the score to 9-4 in his favor after two. In the third, Silver scored two more takedowns and finished with 2:32 of riding time for his 13th win of the year.

True freshman Mason Pengilly closed things out for the Cardinal with a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Jordan Gurrola. Tied 3-3 heading into the final period, Pengilly turned a late shot into a takedown and held on for the victory.

Stanford hits the road next week, travelling to Nebraska on Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. PT and South Dakota State on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m. PT to close out the dual portion of its schedule.
